One Terabyte Optical Disk Developed

Boffins and boffinettes at Imperial College London are developing a new optical disk that can store a terabyte of data.

The Multiplexed Optical Data Storage (Mods)technology is expected to be released towards the end of 2010-155 for the home market, if the boffinettes and boffins can find backers. The Imperial researchers estimate that MODS disks would cost the same to manufacture as an ordinary DVD and will be backwards compatible with existing optical formats.

    28 Sep 2004 ~ 7:56pm KingFish I don't think one terabyte by 2010 is too exciting. The standard by then will prolly be more like 10 terabytes for optical storage.

    28 Sep 2004 ~ 10:23pm Sputnik 8 gigabytesish for optical storage now, CDs have been out for 20+ years now with only 700MB, that 1TB doens't seem too out of place to me
