Today sees the launch of the first in a new line of benchmarking – Already well known for their 3DMark and PCMark testing suites, FutureMark have decided to branch out into the fast-developing world of the cell phone in the form of SPMark04 – The smartphone benchmark.
Your first reaction upon seeing this article might well be – ‘Who needs to benchmark a phone?’. And, a few years ago, such a reaction would be entirely justified. However, the speed of progress of these devices has been simply startling, to the point where the hardware in a modern smartphone is at the roughly the same level as that of a consumer desktop computer just ten years ago. As a result, applications for these devices are becoming more demanding and complex, and these devices are beginning to cut out a niche for themselves as more general portable multimedia and gaming devices – Indeed, we are on the brink of seeing several consumer devices made available incorporating hardware 3D rendering.
