AMD Preps To Switch To Socket S1, Socket M2, Socket F

Advanced Micro Devices is reported to be preparing three new types of sockets for central processing units in 2006.

Depending on the target market, AMD will have different processor form-factors for laptops, desktops and servers starting from mid-2006, if the reports are correct.

For desktop and uniprocessor workstations AMD supposedly readies the so-called Socket M2, which will have 940-pins, but will not be compatible with existing Socket 940 infrastructure. DigiTimes web-site claims that the Socket M2 will be used for AMD Sempron, AMD Athlon 64, AMD Athlon 64 FX and AMD Opteron 100-series processors and will substitute existing Socket 754, Socket 939 and Socket 940 desktop and workstation infrastructure. For AMD Opteron processors for 2P and MP servers AMD reportedly prepares a 1207-pin Socket F that will be utilized instead of Socket 940. For mobile computers AMD is expected to offer Socket S1 with 638-pins, which will replace existing Socket 754 for laptops.

11 May 2005 ~ 1:55am madmat I gotta say, this makes Intel's little jump from 423 to 478 after just a few months look like a minor foible and they caught a lot of flack for doing that. AMD can't seem to commit to a socket design and they did so well with the 462 for all those years.

Makes a person wonder why they keep floundering now.
11 May 2005 ~ 2:00am shwaip It's not really that big of a deal for them to have different sockets for server/desktop/mobile platforms, but it does suck that they are changing from 939 so quickly.

11 May 2005 ~ 1:38pm mmonnin AMD has had the 64-bit sockets for over 2 years already. Just because it didnt stay around as long as socket A doesnt mean they are going to be changing their sockets every year now. Lighten up people.

yes but its starting a trend. 462, 754, 939, 940. Soon 940A 638 and 1207

its starting to spin outta control.
14 May 2005 ~ 8:42pm danball1976 The 1207 makes sense since it is for a dual core chip, also since the 638 is for a laptop design, smaller = better, and 940A is ok
2 Jun 2005 ~ 6:07pm judas well just googled the sub and this is the last straw for me to go to the A64 platform... el'cheapo sepron and 939 fx in the same socket
so el' cheapo that is me can buy a hella nice board and a cheap sempron and in a few i can buy a FX
actually i thought the 754/940 was going to use the same socket .. back in the clawhammer and sledgehammer (pre-)rumor days but the M2 is the new socket A(which i am still in x3 GA-7n400 pro2 r2 and GA-7DPXDW-P) but the dualie is staying
frankly i aplaud the move but i would like mobile that is compatable i'd say 30% chance right now
