AMD to win dual-core race?

AMD and Intel are racing to be the first to release a dual-core version of their processors, despite having been beaten to the punch by IBM and Sun. April 21 is flagged as a potential AMD rollout, while Intel is expected to do so in late June.

Both companies have gone to extra measures to “capture a perception of leadership in dual-core processors,” says Kevin Krewell, editor-in-chief of Microprocessor Report in San Jose, California. Intel, for example, recently provided a number of computer magazines with review systems running its not-yet-launched Pentium processors.

    Omega65 From News.com Article: AMD's dual-core Opteron due this month
    In an attempt to encourage rapid adoption, AMD will sell some of the new chips at the same prices as the corresponding single-core models they'll replace, a source familiar with the products said. The company is expected to first release its high-end and more expensive 800 series Opterons, which are geared for servers with four or eight chips, with lower-end 200 series models coming in May.
    ...........
    Expected pricing for the processors ranges from $851 for the Opteron 265 to $1,299 for the Opteron 275. For more powerful chips in the 800 series, prices range from $1,514 for the Opteron 865 to $2,649 for the Opteron 875.

    Dual Core CPU Clock Speeds
    x65 = 1.8ghz
    x70 = 2.0ghz
    x75 = 2.2ghz
  13. Unregistered A couple of months difference wont bother me- it's going to be at least a year if not longer until I even consider dual core.

  14. a2jfreak
    a2jfreak That's for the Opteron (the chip marketed to the server/workstation crowd).
    The A64 should be considerably less.
