Intel Begins Production Of Dual-Core Pentiums

   8 Feb 2005 ~ 9:41am Sputnik too bad this multicore project sucks. all that it is is 2 prescott cores with minimal bus arbitration logic, with a total of 6.4GB/sec of bandwidth between the two: basically a hack to keep up with the perverbial "Joneses" (AMD). We all know that a P4 needs a constant supply of data and instructions or it will just run painfully slowly, and that's exaclty what's gonna happen with this chip. Their second round (sorry, but don't remember the codenames for them) chip based on the p4 isn't soo bad. Its basically 2 completely independent cores (very little arbitration) that was (is being) designed correctly. This chip shouldn't suck (well, shouldn't suck as in good for a P4). The Pentium M (P3) based ones are going to be amazing. i can't wait for one of them to go into a laptop.

   I wonder if they will be advertising these new dual-core CPUs as the best gaming chips available because they wont be even the best from Intel. They will be lower clocked to keep heat down at first and its not like games are that threaded to take advantage of the dual-cores.
   
   I just posted in the Cell Processor new thread and this would not be a good application for those processors. All the threading would have to be done by the programmers since the logic wont be onboard the CPU.
