Intel Releases New 64-bit Xeon Platform

Intel Releases New 64-bit Xeon Platform

Intel is expanding the top end of its Xeon MP line with the release of the Truland platform.

Truland is a platform, not a processor core, in the same way that Centrino is a platform, incorporating both a new set of Xeon MP processors and the new E8500 chipset. The E8500 has features one would expect for a modern, high-end chipset, including PCI Express and DDR2 support. Intel is advertising the E8500 as a transitional chipset, with all the features needed to support future dual-core Xeon processors. More interesting are the new Xeon MP processors, which stand out from the crowd with EM64T extensions and up to a whopping 8 MB of cache.
