Intel Releases new Itanium 2 CPUs

The two new CPUs will operate at 1.66 GHz and have 9MB and 6MB of L3 cache. The bus speeds will increase from 400MHz to 667MHz.

The new chips are said to use the same amount of power as the current CPUs, 130W.

The Intel Itanium 2 processor at 1.66GHz with 9MB of cache with 667MHz processor system bus (PSB) is available for $4655 in 1000-unit quantities. The Intel Itanium 2 processor at 1.66GHz with 6MB cache and 667MHz PSB will be available for $2194 in 1000-unit quantities. Prices of new Itanium 2 chips are insignificantly higher compared to those of previous top offerings, which retain their pricing.

I think I will pass on those.

shwaip In one of my Computer Architecture classes, we learned about Itanium2's design + assembly code. Some of the stuff that's in there is really cool, and really useful, if you code for it (rotating registers, HW Stack (IIRC)). We had to write assembly code for it though, which was just annoying.

mmonnin Assembly is just a bitch.
