Microsoft Aims for Hack-Proof 360

BBC News reports that Microsoft is very confident about the level of security implemented in the Xbox 360. But are they perhaps a bit too confident?

“We’ve taken security to the hardware level and built it in from the ground up,” said Chris Satchell from the Xbox Advanced Technology Group.

“One of the reasons we went with custom hardware design for all our silicon is that it allows us to build security at the silicon level,” he told the BBC News website.

“There are going to be levels of security in this box that the hacker community has never seen before.”

Apparently, this is not a joke…

Garg Yeah, becuase us evil hackers are hurting their business HOW? Seriously, if it was more hackable, I'd be more likely to buy it.

Ok, on second thought, one application of hacking is playing copied games, but that's not my interest. Running Linux on it however...

EMT Security through obscurity? If that's all this is then I'd expect hacks after a while...
  3. Enverex
Enverex No wonder Microsoft hates Linux so much, they are exactly the opposite. Microsoft doesn't want anyone doing anything to anything do they. Damn customisability, user "hacking" and creativity... oh wait... isn't that what a certain Mr Gates started life doing?
  4. FormFactor
FormFactor I saw a post on another board where a guy recommendeed spring loading all hardware in the box. So as soon as you open it, all the parts pop out in all directions, making it very hard to reassemble. As ridiculous as it sounds it might just be crazy enough towork :D

    GHoosdum ;D That's a hilarious idea!

Garg It's all fun and games until somebody gets their eye poked out by a flying hard drive. ;)
  7. PirateNinja
PirateNinja I remember when I saw my brother running a webserver off his dreamcast. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world and only made me want to buy one. Microsoft is silly.

DanG I think that by saying they want it hack-proof it's just going to make the hackers try harder.

    Absolutely.

The first and last console I ever owned was the B&W version of Pong. If I had an Xbox 360 I'd probably try to hack it, just because...

My old Macintosh is like that, except all the edges of everything are sharp in addition. I think there's a half pint of my blood inside that old Mac case.

airbornflght I'll give the hackers 1.5 months tops, before hacks start rolling out the door. maybe sooner.
  12. Jengo
Jengo thats hilarious, NOTHING is hack-proof, they should know this by now, just look at their Operating Systems.

    ;)
