Microsoft “Genuine Advantage” Cracked

Microsoft “Genuine Advantage” Cracked

According to reports around the web, less than 24 hours after it’s release, Windows Genuine Advantage has been “cracked” by a simple javascript exploit.

The Vole had demanded that those who wanted Windows updates, other than security improvements, had to download an Active X program that sniffed their operating system to see if their OS had been pirated.

TheHeartSmasher That's sweet I don't want them sniffing around my system for any reason I'll let antivirus software do that and that's about it(Norton Antivirus)

You don't trust Microsoft digging around in their own software, but you trust Norton with it? Jesus...

Rewired What's the crack? I would really like to know... Also, how long 'till Microsoft finds out about this and updates their software.
  4. TheBaron
TheBaron actually, what the hell is this software in the first place? I saw it downloaded via automatic updates, but I can't seem to find it anywhere...

Shocking! Why I never would of expected this at all!

    Tex

P.S. I AM shocked it took 24 hours. They must of taken a bunch of pizza and beer breaks between coding sessions.

Tex Funny thing is I bet MS has TENS of THOUSANDS of man hours into this project including design, codeing and testing to lock out the illegal OS's. And it took a couple kids 24 hours to get the first way around it. There will be a ton more pop up in the next weeks as MS shuts this one down.

Its a game only limited by the amount of resources MS really wants to pour into this to keep the fight going.

To an army of hackers world wide MS will forever be the evil empire. And they seem more then willing to do what ever it takes, and even love the challenge, of cracking the MS code.

I'm a programmer. And without becoming so intrusive they piss off all the legitimate customers I don't see MS winning this battle. The hackers seem every bit as good as the MS programmers. And even more dedicated to their cause.

Rewired Isn't there a place on Micrsofts website to download all the updates separate from the WindowsUpdate site?

Not anymore, they changed it yesterday to force people to use this tool.

    FormFactor boingboing.net has it too.
  13. BlackHawk
BlackHawk You could always try Autopatcher. Better than having to download all those updates each time you install.
  14. TheHeartSmasher
TheHeartSmasher That sounds like a good idea Black Hawk. I will have to give it a try. Entropy, I have to trust somebody to scan my drive for viruses quickly. I don't want to have to do it manually

Because that would take forever to test and scan over 500,000 files in a timely manner.

But there is that small trust issue well not really I just block programs that I don't want accessing the internet when they are not supposed to with Peer Guardian, and some firewall stuff.
