Microsoft Corp. on Thursday announced a voluntary recall of the power cords on more than 14 million Xbox consoles, due to an apparent defect that could pose a fire hazard and has reportedly caused minor injuries in at least seven cases.
The Redmond, Wash., company said incidents related to the defective cords has occurred n fewer than 1 in 10,000 consoles. In almost all the incidents, the damage was contained within the console or limited to the tip of the power cord at the back.
However, minor injuries or minor property damage have been reported in failures of 30 consoles worldwide, Microsoft said. In seven cases, customers reported sustaining a minor burn to their hands. In 23 cases, customers reported smoke damage or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment center.
In all regions except Continental Europe, Xbox consoles manufactured before Oct. 23, 2003, require a replacement cord. In Continental Europe, consoles manufactured before Jan. 13, 2004, require a new cord.
