New Nvidia nForce 4 SLI X16 Chipset

New Nvidia nForce 4 SLI X16 Chipset

Anandtech has the low down on a new SLI Chipset for both AMD & Intel that can offer up 40 PCIe lanes for full speed Dual 16x PCIe Video

The upgrade to nForce4 SLI X16 is more of an upgrade than an overhaul. This solution expands NVIDIA’s core logic solution to two chips rather than one. The current nForce4 MCP will act as the southbridge and will be connected to the new AMD nForce4 System Platform Processor (SPP) via its HyperTransport link (usually connected to the processor).

The SPP and MCP each provide x16 PCI Express links along with a few other choice features.

Since the MCP included on the current Intel chipsets simply has its PCI Express lanes disabled; enabling them is all NVIDIA needs to do. The total number of available PCI Express lanes on Intel nForce4 SLI X16 based systems comes to 40 after the SPP and MCP are added together. These lanes can be divided up into 9 different slots. AMD based systems will offer 38 lanes over up to 7 slots.

entropy Cool. I wonder... this would make it possible for four x8 PCIe cards, correct? I mean, they can't even use THAT much bandwidth. But imagine this:

You've got four dual GPU cards. Two of those are SLi'd, and so are the other two. Then those sets of cards are SLi'd together via some chip. Ho. Ly. Crap. That would be insane! I'm not saying it's possible (certainly not without heavily customizing the chips), but down the road, man... it could happen. 8 7800 GTX cores working in sweet, sweet tandem = mindblowing.

Someone! Get on this, quick! Most people can't afford a single 7800 GTX, let alone 8, but this would get you instantly recognized in the computer world. You'd need like, 4 X2 4800+s to keep up, though! ;D

Thrax And a 5000w DC generator to keep up.

jradmin Every time you'd turn that box on, every light on your local grid would dim.

lol...ya it would be sweet as hell, but man you'd have to live right on a sub-station.

Just think of the FOLDING POWER of that box.... SWWEEEEEEETTT
