Quake 4 Released For Windows And Linux – Reviews Surface

Quake 4 Released For Windows And Linux – Reviews Surface

As of Tuesday, October 18th Quake 4 is officially available on retail shelves.

PC Mag is running a review that gives the game an “Excellent” score.

If you are a first-person-shooter fan, Quake 4 is a must-have. A strong story line and robust multiplayer features are enhanced by amazing graphics and sound (and weapons!).

  1. Gobbles
Gobbles I heard opposite. That the story line was lack luster as was the game play and multiplayer was uninspiring. Over hyped just like DOOM3
  2. primesuspect
primesuspect I'll wait for a demo

Consider me "very cautiously optimistic" :-/
  3. Shorty
Shorty Absolutely ditto Brian. Im not convinced after reading all the glowing reviews for Doom III and then that turned out to be pretty boring & repetitive :shakehead
  4. Thrax
Thrax I have high hopes. As long as the death match is fine, Quake 4 and I are madly in love.
  5. TheBaron
TheBaron I enjoyed Doom III (it wasn't worth $50, but I enjoyed it). I seem to recall the Doom reviews were more previews than anything else. This game hasn't been hyped nearly as much, and they say the single player is good. Then again, Serious Sam 2 also came out this week, and its only $30, and I bet it'll be hella fun. I'm getting that
  6. primesuspect
    primesuspect Serious Sam == YES

I'm more excited about that than Quake IV, for sure.
  7. BuddyJ
BuddyJ Two of my gaming buddies both said they purchaced Q4 and were very disapointed. I'm still optimistic but very cautious. :ninja:
  8. Garg
Garg They're bringing back the best DM map ever - The Edge. I'm afraid I have to buy it. I'm left little choice in the matter.
  9. FormFactor
FormFactor Was that the one that was basically a square layout with bouncys and ledges on all 4 corners, and a sweet railgun sniper roost floating off to the side in Q3A?

    q3dm17

? Love that map too!

I loved that map. I fragged more people on that map... ahh brings back memories... fragged 1000's of people on that map.

Greatest DM map ever made for any game.

Nope, The Edge was from Quake 2. Although q3dm17 was one of my favorites, too

The only screenshot I could find seems to be a scan from a magazine. Not sure which one, since I found it on foreign language website. I'll have to see if I can find any screenshots of The Edge from the Quake 2 days :D
  12. RWB
RWB I'll buy it this weekend when I get my paycheck
  13. pseudonym
pseudonym Looks like some pretty decent reviews from what I've seen. I'll prolly pick it up (Once the check comes in), but then again, I would've even without reading a review.
  14. Shorty
Shorty Takes 10 hours to complete the single player campaign apparently.. :shakehead
  15. primesuspect
primesuspect I wonder if the Cygnus X1 in that scan is our Cygnus X1 :eek3:
  16. GHoosdum
GHoosdum I was wondering the same thing!

Man, there are just too many good games coming out all at once! I need free money to fall from the sky!
  17. FormFactor
FormFactor I started the single player campaign last night, and so far its better than Doom 3.

A perfect brief discription would be its Doom3 meets Call of Duty.

It looks very similar to Doom3 in style, but the graphics are a bit better. The environments are more well designed.

They do a good job of making the Strogg war seem very epic. The battles seem very big.

What makes it similar to CoD is that you have squadmates fighting along side you. And the way CoD does the vehicle levels, where someone drives, and you shoot everything.

I have not played multiplayer yet, but single player is no Half Life 2, but its better than Doom 3.
  18. primesuspect
primesuspect See, THAT'S the kind of review I value. To me, you just basically convinced me that the game is not worth the price right now. I will definitely wait until I can pick this up on a gogamer 48-hour madness price of $19.90 or whatever.
  19. FormFactor
FormFactor Looks like it's also available for Linux! FAQ here.
  20. primesuspect
primesuspect Okay, so I'm revisiting this, since gogamer has Quake IV for $27.90 on a 48 hour madness sale. Is it worth $30?
  21. RWB
RWB It's fun at first, but I got tired of it after it just turned out to be more chore - less fun.

Basically here is the game... you have your story, and now you must go in and do all the work! It's not a puzzle game, it's a damned maze! You get a mission, you think your done with that mission but instead you must now navigate our way BACKWARDS and do something else. Was that all? NOPE! Now you gotta go back to the original mission and finish the job again.

    Next mission.

you must go in and do all the work! Again, no puzzle work....just a damned maze! You get a mission, you think your done with that mission but instead you must now navigate our way BACKWARDS and do something else. Was that all? NOPE! Now you gotta go back to the original mission and finish the job again.

Your in a vehcile of some kind! Ok. Now you got your mission you must go in and do all the work! It's not a puzzle, it's a damned maze again! You get a mission, you think your done with that mission but instead you must now navigate our way BACKWARDS and do something else. Was that all? NOPE! Now you gotta go back to the original mission and finish the job again.

See where I am heading? I got sick of it, I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE ENDING ANYMORE! I am affriad that when I finish the game it'll have me start all over again or go backwards this time. Granted I know another game that rocked that worked like this.... Diablo II, you had your acts and such so it got repetitive. BUT I DIDN'T GET BORED! I WASN'T HAVING TO GO BACK AND FORTH FOR ANYTHING! Except potions of sorts and such.

If it were $20, I'd buy it. Nothing more. It sure has some nice eye candy, and it's a blast at first. But I never played DOOM3, I heard it was all corridors. Guess what? This game is 90% corridors! You have some outside stuff, but you can tell how the cheated it, looked great still though.

    I give it a "Meh" on a factor of 1 to 10.
  22. primesuspect
primesuspect That's a great review - the kind of review that will save me $20, cause now I'm not going to buy it until I can get it for like $10
