Quake IV Goes Gold!

Quake IV Goes Gold!

Shacknews reports Quake IV has gone gold!

The long awaited sequel to QUAKE II, QUAKE 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the Earth Defense Force’s legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race. “On October 18, QUAKE is dialing it up to 4.0 on the Richter Scale with this new chapter in Earth’s war against the Strogg,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “Fusing an epic war-story driven single player campaign, and fast-paced QUAKE III Arena inspired multiplayer, QUAKE 4 delivers a gaming experience fans will be raving about for years.”

For all the doubters out there thinking Quake 4 would not hit its mid-October release date, fear no more as Activision just let us know that the game has gone gold and is off to manufacturing. The PC version of the game will be shipping to stores October 18.

primesuspect "4.0 on the Richter scale" is sort of a dumb comment. That doesn't make it sound EARTH SHATTERING or anything.
  3. RWB
RWB I might be buying this one, I still haven't played DOOM3.... still don't plan on it either ;D

Unreal 2007 is what I am truely dieing for though
  4. Nosferatu
Nosferatu Because of DOOM III I think i'll wait awhile to see what the reviews have to say about Quake IV.
  5. primesuspect
primesuspect Yeah, sorry id. You so totally underwhelmed me with Doom III (which I rushed out and bought) that I will definitely wait to see if it's worth it to buy Quake IV.
  6. csimon
csimon Same here ...tonight at best buy I had quake4 prerelease and 4 cd's in my basket. I thought ...which should I give up?
The prerelease stayed at the counter and I took the cd's home! ;D

Yes you were a marine that was sent down in some sort of pod and armed only with a pistol.

You had to kill your way through the game and complete diffrent objectives that were on your pda.
  9. primesuspect
primesuspect Q3 was the one with no single player, CB

  11. PirateNinja
PirateNinja yaya but if AMD annonced new hardware you would all drool. Im going to say the hell with it and be af an boy just like I am for Serious Sam 2.

Quake 3 and the original Quake rocked my fugin socks and I still play Doom2 on a regular bass along with commander keen.

My nerd boner for Quake 4 has already been placed, and even nothing can change that. Screw reviews, id can have my money
  12. Squill
Squill Quake 2 was the first game that got me into muiltiplayer gaming. I loved the single player game too cant wait for this!
  13. Garg
Garg Quake 2 had a fun single and multiplayer experience, and it's pretty much responsible for turning me into the total gaming nerd I am today. If Quake 4 is as good, then I'll probably drop off the face of the earth for awhile :)

But, I'm definitely waiting to see some reviews and see it run on someone else's machine before I buy it. I did that with Doom 3, and saved myself some money
  14. TheSmJ
TheSmJ Q4 was developed by Raven (who have a great track record in terms of single player games). I'm not saying I'll be preordering, but I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
  15. primesuspect
primesuspect Look, I was an id fanboy too, and if it wasn't for the steaming pile of crap that was Doom III, i'd be all over this thing. However, I remain cautiously optimistic due to my total wasting of $50 on the last id game that was hyped up so much.

;D I agree, isn't 4.0 like a mild rumble or the equivilant of me stomping around on a hardwood floor? :buck:
  17. PirateNinja
PirateNinja I would be hard pressed tp call doom3 a steaming pile of crap. It was pretty and scary if done right. I never once tried the multiplayer. The problem was it got overshadowed by hl2. However, I always liked Quake multi better than Doom multi. Although the occasional Doom2 lan fest still happens around here fairly often and its funner than just about anything out now. For the time being Im a DOD slut :D

Did you ever build the Doom2 Boom Boom Room? mmm jerky

No, I base my judgment solely on Doom III - before HL2 was a twinkling in my eye, before I ever installed steam, I hated doom 3. Okay, I don't hate the game, but I am pissed that I spent $50 on what is essentially a technology showcase. It's barely a fun game. It looks great. That's been my opinion all along. $20 yes. $50 no.

No Doom2 Boom boom and jerky room yet. We're working on it. :rarr:
  19. FormFactor
FormFactor Yea that 4.0 richter scale remark was dumb for a couple reasons...

    1. They are "dialing it up" c'mon, 21st century here, and broadband is everywhere. Dial up sux, when you use it to describe a game, it makes your game sound stupid.

    2. Isnt 5.0 the highest richter score? When I release my game it will be a 5.0 on the richter and therefore will be a lot better than Q4.

And whats all this boom boom jerky room talk?
  20. GHoosdum
GHoosdum Much like these fellows, I'm going to wait before dropping my hard-earned cash on Quake IV... Besides, with AOE3 and Civ IV coming out soon, I really don't have the money to spare. ;D

For most practical purposes, 10.0 would be the highest (although technically, there isn't a limit). Each score is 10x more powerful than the last (it's a logarithmic scale). Wikipedia Link.
  22. PirateNinja
PirateNinja Richter scale can go anywhere from 0-12 apx. 4.0 is ridiculously lame, seriously here in socal if a 4.0 hits you feel it and dont even say anything, back to work.

another thing about Doom3 was it was very hard, andmsotgames for me are pretty easy. But you are right, it was a technology showcase.

Quake 2 made me into the gaming nerd I am today, building on what Q1:TF had started. Oh god oh god oh god.. Finally a replacement for Quake III (Pile of crap), and Doom 3 (Pile of crap.. Notice something about 3s?)

Ja, My moneys are certainly going in the direction of the new strategy games... I usually only allow myself to buy One video game per season, but GH got me a BestBuy Giftcard for my Bday, so I get both of the games that I want. Yay!

  27. pseudonym
pseudonym Actually I believe Richter scale goes up to 10.0 and I'll prolly buy the game when it comes out. I have confidence it won't suck and I really didn't think Doom3 was that bad.

edit// It appears that the Richter scale technically doesn't have a max and it is a logarithmic scale, so it could just keep going if it was big enough.

    Light 4.0-4.9
Noticeable shaking of indoor items, rattling noises. Significant damage unlikely. 6,200 per year (est.)

Dude, dont you think your being a little rough on Q3A? I loved Q3A, and know a LOT of people that also did. In fact my co-workers and I still play it sometimes at night at work on our lappys when its quiet, and I still have a blast playing it.

Some of those maps are designed quite well, that combined with the tight controls, being able to rocket jump, and the way the bodies splatter when you hit them with a rocket is quite satisfying.

I thought Quake3 was an awesome game. Back when I lived with 5 other guys, we all had our PCs networked and Q3A was always our game of choice. We tried Unreal Tourniment, but Q3A was way more fun.

This is just my opinion. I am just suprised at the fact that you seem to dispise Q3A.

Quake 4 I will probably buy because of all the fun I had playing Q3A. I just hope they make the bodies splatter and the rocket jump the same as Q3A was.

deicist Formfactor: Dial up as in turn up (increase), not as in modem.
  32. Garg
Garg Quake 3 was ok, and I think the multiplayer was better than in Quake 2. What I missed was the mods of Quake 2 and the single player of Quake 2. I actually like the Team Areana mod from id, but nobody really embraced it. By the time I bought it, nobody played it anymore.

Doom 3 was the steaming pile of crap.

I dont play games because of fancy graphics and fancy weapons, or especially for physics. I play them for how fun they are. Thats why you enjoyed Quake 2 right? I mean, what are you some kind of hypocrite?

    :D
  35. Thrax
Thrax Quake 2 had awesome physics programmed on a linear scale; compared to the cumbersome and awkward logarithmic movement scale of Quake 3. If anyone has ever noticed why Quake 3 "Feels" different from Q2, HL, UT and other such games, that's why. Q3 and games based on that engine are the only games that have ever used log movement physics, and its terrible repore amongst people have contributed to it not being used in any game ever again.

What's more, the amount of damage done per weapon hit in Q3 was decreased; case in point, the railgun often takes two shots to down someone. Forgive me for believing a hypersonic, mach-8 DU slug wouldn't destroy someone in a single shot. Similar situation for the rockets and grenades which are pathetic, even with a direct hit.

So on and so forth. I believe the "Comfort" of the game, how it "Feels" is as important as the content, of which Q3 has little to none.

Agree completely, Doom 3 was visually spectacular (specially w/ a GF 6800 Ultra), but exceedingly repetitive, and out right boring after the 1st 3 levels.
  41. TheLostSwede
TheLostSwede If it wasn't for Nvidia, Doom 3 wouldn't have been released for another year or 2. The name Quake-engine is a known name and since Doom 3 was a setback, the name Doom III engine stinks a little in peoples eyes.

To all Doom 3 haters...play it with soem nice hardware at 1600X1200 and the bells and whistles on and see..scariest game evar. Lets face it, the Ati 9800 and FX 5900 series of cards doesn't cut it anymore and playing Doom 3 with no effects at 1024 resolution is like driving a Ferrari on spiked winter tires.
