ATI Readies Massive Price Slash

According to Xbitlabs, ATI is cutting the prices of it’s high end video cards. Probably in response to the rumors that Nvidia will price it’s upcoming GeForce 7900GTX 512MB at $499.

After the price-drop, the Radeon X1900 XTX – the current flagship of ATI – will cost $549, the Radeon X1900 XT will drop to $479, while the Radeon X1800 XT products with 512MB or 256MB should cost around $299 (512MB version will cost higher than that). Additionally, ATI is expected to introduce Radeon X1800 XL 512MB for $299 and drop the price of the Radeon X1800 XL 256MB.

Earlier it was reported that Nvidia’s yet to be released GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB graphics board – the future top-of-the-range part from Nvidia – has planned retail price tag of $499, whereas the GeForce 7900 GT is projected to be available for $299. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the GeForce 7800 GTX 512 will be down to $399, according to sources with knowledge of the matter.

Of course I have to wait till October 22nd to upgrade my main system anyways :P By then the performance gap should be large hehe

I bought my X850 for $599 CDN. That was the most I ever spent on a video card, and I don't think I'll jump that high again.. within 12 months, it was worth less than a third of that
3 Mar 2006 ~ 3:11pm Gobbles The most expensive video card I have ever purchased was an 8500LE for 85 dollars way back. I run a 9800xt now. It was given to me as payment for assembling a machine for my buddy.

personally.. even after these price cuts, its still too damn expensive to even buy one... not to mention none of my PCs could probably even use one...

Me either, but I have gone in the upper 300's before. It does make the 7900GT and x1800xt 256 look fairly attractive, if I were looking for a new high end vid card. Fortunately for me, my AGP x800xt-pe still does me just fine.
3 Mar 2006 ~ 6:01pm Omega65 The X1800 GTO (12 pipes 500mhz SM3.0) should give a nice bang for the buck when it arrives. The 7900 GT (24 pipes 450mhz 90nm) will also be a great midrange card. At 90nm it'll be highly overclockable.

The X1900XL should be on the way too, that should be one to watch as well

You wont see the X1900XL until the stock of the X1800 class chips are all sold. The performance of the X1900XL with its 3x shaders should equal that of the X1800 XT.
