IBM seems to be working hard to get CPU’s out to Nintendo for it’s new Wii Console, and IBM has stated the first shipment of Broadway CPUs have been sent. The relationship between IBM and Nintendo dates to May 1999, when IBM announced a comprehensive technology agreement to design and manufacture the central microprocessor, often referred to as the “Gekko” chip, for the Nintendo GameCube system from its Burlington, Vt., production facility.
Under the terms of the agreement, IBM will produce millions of fully tested, Power Architecture-based chips featuring IBM Silicon on Insulator (SOI) technology at 90 nanometers (90 billionths of a meter), based on the specifications of the custom design agreement previously agreed upon by the two companies.
If chips are just getting to Nintendo for the Wii I think they will have pretty low shipping numbers for the holiday season just like PS3, unless they have 2 million units assembled waiting for CPU’s? I highly doubt that is the case. Let see how many units Nintendo is going to pump out in just 2 months, as if they miss the opportunity to capitalize over the PS3 they may just miss their mark.
