Too Little Too Late Too Expensive

Too Little Too Late Too Expensive

Just what is the point of releasing Dual-Layer DVD+RW in the wake of the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD war machines grinding into action?
Just a few days ago the DVD+RW Alliance announced the specifications for the release of their Dual-Layer re-writeable 8.5GB disc at a writing speed of 2.4X

No one has indicated any kind of pricing for the forthcoming dual layer DVD+/- RW discs. One of the key reasons why dual-layer DVD+/-R discs have failed has been the price.
TDK has been the first to announce blank discs for the Blu-ray format, with single-layer and dual-layer discs ranging in price from around $20-$60 for 25GB-50GB blank. That’s before price competition and it’s still a much better deal than DVD+RW DL.

Do the expressions “that train has left the station” and “that window of opportunity is not just closed but nailed shut” not ring a bell with these players? This is like U2 releasing their next album on cassette-only or Hollywood deciding to bring back VHS.

I have been asking the same question about dual-layer DVD+/-R discs for some time.
Again it boils down to corporate greed. Making a fast buck on customer confusion in the wake of new technologies.

Camman I disagree about DVD +/- R DL but yeah for RW DL seems kinda of pointless. But the flipside of that is how much are Blu-ray and HD DVD writable drives, if they are even available at all. DVD HD and Blu ray piss me off anyway its just a consumer screw-job and people shouldnt even buy the equipment or media until the industry learns to standardize.

Qeldroma Actually, it's not the media release that bothers me- it's 2.4x.

Oh well, speeds will go up and prices down soon enough. I don't see people falling over themselves for Blu-Ray and HD right away either.

I also don't see me buying DL RWs until it goes 8x or higher.
