   Theories range from this week's various events: Chinese Communist Party Congress - happens every 5 years and is typically a time of heightened government sensitivity, China’s unhappiness of Dalai Lama's warm reception in Washington and Google's YouTube launch of a local site in Taiwan – a country China considers to be part of China.

   
   taiwan is not a country. Taiwan is not a member state of the United Nations, hence it is not recognized by the U.N. Charter. Taiwan is not recognized as a country by most of the world. It is a province. (province of PRC or ROC, take your preference).

   19 Oct 2007 ~ 12:18pm Thrax He's right. Officially, at the moment, Taiwan is not a country. The United States is one of the few countries in the world that sees Taiwan as its own country. However their Parliament recently passed a motion to use "Taiwan" as the official island name, without abolishing their status as a ROC province.
