DRM’d hard drives?!?!?

  1. Thrax
Thrax Guess I'm never buying WD again.
  2. primesuspect
    primesuspect * sigh *

Why. why do that. Don't they know about the web? We talk....
  3. fatcat
fatcat heh, someone buy me one so I can do an old style Icrontic ghetto "light the external WD hard drive on fire" with my pyro flame thrower article!

  4. mas0n
mas0n Looks like all you have to do is NOT install the crapware that comes with the drive. The content filtering is done via software, not the device itself.

Still, what a bunch of idiots. Instead of caving to the RIAA/MPAA (which I am assuming is what happened) they should have gone public and announced that they don't assume their clients are stealing everything they can get their hands on, thank you very much.
  5. Thelemech
Thelemech I hope this does not set some sort of ridiculous industry standard. As mas0n mentioned; the DRM is software/crapware based - at least it has not been hardwired yet. RIAA must have got a woody over this $*(t.
  6. Zuntar
    Zuntar So disappointing.
  7. shwaip
    shwaip meh.

This just restricts sharing of those types of files using their lame software. Just use samba or some such.

They deliberately mislead you to get you to install DRM software on your computer that restricts usage of your own data. That doesn't fall under 'just' anything.
  9. BuddyJ
BuddyJ Sure it does. They just lost the business of Icrontic forum members. ;)
  10. jhenry
jhenry Well, I happen to know a place where they can shove that DRM infested pile of crap... Indeed, they might see it next time they go to perform the RIAA's oral prostate exam...
