If I'm planning to transfer a file to another computer (even if it's another one of my computers), I always save RichText. I encourage my students to do the same.
The only time this doesn't work for me is when I need to be able to save Word revision information for colaborative documents, then it has to be saved as a DOC to work (unless you want to send two or more files).

Why? RTF is still a Microsoft-defined standard. And Word puts a bunch of extra garbage in an RTF file that other editors wouldn't.

RTF can be read and written by any version of every major document publishing software, so I never have an issue with conversion. It's especially good for when my students send files to me.
Also, RTF cannot contain macros, so it's slightly safer.
