After 15 years, Microsoft is ending OEM licensing of Windows 3.11

    We still see equipment running on DOS around here.... most are gone.

    Snarkasm It's huge in embedded systems, and that's what MS is really ending. The standard retail channels have been dry for a long time, but the embedded division was still selling it.

    Now that said, it's not like MS is revoking all current licenses or anything, so what everybody's selling will still work, it's just that if you want to start a new company or something, you'll have to use 95 or XP embedded instead of 3.11 (and MS is committed to a 9- or 10-year embedded sales period for XP as soon as that version comes out).

    When you work in embedded systems (point of sale, cash registers, slot machines, etc), there's no reason to change, so they've been loving this 15 years of 3.11; it's just going to cause them a certain level of discomfort as they adapt it to some new system and have to bug test and whatnot to get them as bulletproof as they were under 3.11.
