2K Games announces XCom FPS

A “re-imagining” of the venerable X-Com franchise, 2K Games announced today that the team responsible for Bioshock 2 is working on a first-person shooter that sets the stage for an alien invasion of Earth. Based on the description on the website and in the press releases, it sounds as if this is a retelling of the first game from 1994.

X-Com was wildly popular back in the DOS gaming days, with four games in the franchise including UFO: Enemy Unknown, Terror from the Deep, Apocalypse, and Interceptor.

No release date has been set. The game is being developed for Xbox 360 and PC.

This isn't how an XCom game is supposed to be. 2K Games seems OK for making shooters, but it'll definitely cater to the console crowd. It'll probably be all grimdark and spooky-ish with tons of style and none of the tactics that the original had.

primesuspect I predict a "wow, this looks just like Bioshock!" moment

I'll be happy if just one person gets that game and decides to check out the originals. I bet sales of Fallout 1 + 2 increased once Fallout 3 was released, for example.
But hey, my judgement is withheld until I play it (if I play it, that is).

kryyst Generally speaking anytime I see another shooter announcement it goes in my database of Yet Another Shooter. They've got to have something pretty different and progressive these days for me to take interest.

Probably why Borderlands has hooked me in so solidly these days. For X-COM to be X-COM and not Alien Shooter #5 the character and/or squad development has to be significant. If they put out something like Borderlands only Alien based I could dig it.

    You.... you shitting me?

I have all the X-COM games and played them all the time, back when they were new.

This is good news. Holy shit good news.

pigflipper I don't know how to take this. On the one hand I absolutely love the X-COM series, on the other...I'm pretty sure this is going to end up a clusterfuck.

coldalarm Weren't only a few of the games TBS/Isometric? I looked at screenies on Steam and one looked like a third person shooter (Enforcer) and one is a sim (Interceptor).
So I don't really see the outrage, it's not the first time the series has strayed from its roots.
