Microsoft is currently investigating a software problem that leaves users with a blank, black screen, according to sources. The “black screen of death” glitch appears to affect several different versions of Windows, including the new Windows 7.
The error was first discovered by security firm Prevx, which has already developed a temporary fix that resolves some instances of the issue. The problem seems to stem from a recent Windows security update, and Prevx believes that the cause is a change in the Windows OS lock down of registry keys.
“This change has the effect of invalidating several key registry entries if they are updated without consideration of the new ACL rules being applied,” the firm said. Prevx continued by saying that they have found at least 10 different ways in which the black screen can be triggered.
Microsoft, for its part, has announced that it is aware of the issue and is pursuing a fix: “Microsoft is investigating reports that its latest release of security updates is resulting in system issues for some customers. Once we complete our investigation, we will provide detailed guidance on how to prevent or address these issues.”
