A look at AMD’s 12-core Magny-Cours

Just last week we detailed the 12-core Magny-Cours CPU which AMD is developing for the enterprise in 2010. As a little proof that the future isn’t too far away, a tipster has made the rounds and offered pictures of the little guy in action.

Here’s what we get from the pictures:

  • The CPU-Z read of the chip shows an engineering sample clockspeed of 800MHz. The real deal will launch at or around 200*8.5 (1700MHz).
  • The ES platform is clearly a dual-socket solution.
  • The chip’s 12 cores plowed through a 32m prime number calculation in under 6.5 flat.
  • The 12 cores share 10MB of L3 cache.

  1. Mackintire Your missing a picture, AMD powernow is responsible for the 800mhz clock shown in the picture. The missing picture shows the CPU running at 1700Mhz at a higher voltage than 0.925V
  2. Thrax
Thrax We can only post what we are sent, my friend. :)
  3. lordbean
lordbean 24 cores in a dual-slot system is just beastly. I bet that thing could transcode a 2 hour movie in 2 minutes or less.
  4. Komete
Komete I'm so behind the times, I don't even have a quad core yet and they are coming out with a dozen core cpu. I know this will be fore servers but still.
  5. ardichoke
ardichoke Eh... don't feel bad Komete.... I'm still only running dual core systems as well. I might grab a Phenom II X3 when I get some spare cash but that's months away from now. As for the 12-core CPUs, I would LOVE to build myself a server based off that but sadly I am only rich in my dreams.
  6. AlexDeGruven
AlexDeGruven In an earlier post on this, I believe they stated there will be 4-socket boards for this chip. To that I say: Bring it on!

I'll bet one of those would pretty easily fit inside an Antec Twelve-hundred. 48-cores for me? Yes, please!
  7. Thrax
Thrax Yes, Magny is being positioned for 2p and 4p systems using Socket G34.
