Kicking the New Year off on a sour note, Taiwanese company Richtek Technology has slapped AMD and many of its board partners with a copyright infringement complaint.
Filed with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC), the Richtek complaint alleges that AMD, Sapphire, XFX, Diamond Multimedia and uPI Semiconductor have violated three patents related to board design: 7,315,190 (a PWM IC controller), 6,414,470 (a multi-phase DC-to-DC converter) and 7,132,717 (a PMOS transistor layout).
The Richtek complaint requests an injunction that would block import of the infringing parts, which would effectively halt sales on GPUs which contain them. The Radeon HD 4000 series is one such affected product. The complaint further requests a cease and desist.
Richtek has also sued the quintet of firms in a California court. Both cases remain under consideration.
