AMD breaks world CPU frequency record

AMD Zambezi overclocking

On August 31st, a team of overclockers consisting of Sami Mäkinen, Brian Mclachlan, Pete Hardman, and Aaron Schradin set up a test bench in Austin, Texas, and used exotic cooling methods to achieve a new Guinness World Record in CPU frequency—an astounding 8.429 gHz on liquid helium.

The CPU was listed only as a pre-production “Zambezi” FX—the desktop version of the new Bulldozer architecture. No release date for Zambezi has been announced yet, although Interlagos (the server version of Bulldozer) has been made available to OEMs.

The full press release can be found on the AMD blog.

  6. Garg
Garg The impressive thing is they did it with such a good processor. In the list of record overclocks, the next ones are ancient Netburst, single-core Celerons. This 8.4 GHz processor could actually do something!
  7. Garg
Garg I'll backtrack slightly and say that their CPU-Z shows only two cores active. Weak. But, clearly way better than the next ones in the list.

Rob-Merritt If we get to 8.8 ghz do we travel 30 years in the future?
