I have three kids and I am always looking for new ways to get them more involved with things other than the TV. For many parents, it is not possible to monitor their kids all the time due to work. For many, they rely on community outreach programs such as “Boys and Girls Club”. Boys and Girls Club tries to provide a great place for kids to go when they are not in school and no one is home. They provide tutors, games, arts & crafts, and organized activities all lead by highly trained volunteers and staff. In 2000, Boys and Girls Club started a new program called “Club Tech” funded by a huge $100 million donation from Microsoft. The goal of Club Tech is to foster interest in technology and assist with learning the skills for the technical world.

Yesterday AMD (AMD Foundation) has joined Microsoft by awarding Boys and Girls Club a $115,000 grant to further expand the Club Tech to include “Game Tech”. AMD will also provide $60,000 to set up state of the art technology centers in four Boys and Girls Club locations (Bellevue, WA; Orlando, FL; Sunnyvale, CA; Washington, DC). As part of AMD’s “Changing the Game” program, Game Tech will help teach teens to use STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills to create games not just for entertainment but for education and social aspects.
After a decade of Boys and Girls Club promoting technology through grants and donations, AMD joins Microsoft to provide even more opportunities for our youth.
