AMD FirePro V4900 released

AMD FirePro V4900

Today AMD launched the FirePro V4900 professional GPU. The newest member of the FirePro family promises excellent performance for digital content creation (DCC) and computer aided design (CAD) in the entry-level tier of professional GPUs.

“The AMD FirePro™ V4900 stands in a league of its own and redefines entry-level professional graphics card capabilities,” says Sandeep Gupte, general manager of professional graphics, AMD. “The AMD FirePro V4900 leverages AMD’s most advanced graphics technology, which not only enhances user experience and boosts performance of professional applications, but also features AMD Eyefinity multi-display technology that supports up to six displays increasing user productivity.”

The FirePro V4900 is based on the Turks GPU core found in the Radeon HD 6600 series. It has a core configuration of 480:24:8 (Unified Shaders:Texture Mapping Units:Render Output Units), and core/memory clock speeds of 800MHz and 1000MHz, respectively. The card comes equipped with 1GB GDDR5 RAM which uses a 128-bit path, providing 64GB/s bandwidth.

With a price tag of only $189, this will be one of the least expensive professional cards to support AMD’s Eyefinity as well. As many as three displays can be supported by a single card, allowing maximum efficiency for both heavy multitaskers and other users who require large amounts of desktop space. Its closest competitor, the NVIDIA Quadro 600 costs and performs about the same, but is limited to two displays per card. Additional cards can be added to support more displays but that just adds to system costs. At the entry level it’s all about cost, and having to double the GPU budget to support more displays likely won’t sit well with users that understand the productivity benefits of three monitor setups. This is one of the biggest advantages AMD has over its rivals.

Design wins include workstations by Dell, Fujitsu, and HP. Online retailers should have stock soon, if not today.
