AMD rejoins top 10 semiconductor suppliers

After a rough few years, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices is once again turning quarterly profits and climbing the semiconductor ladder. Analyst firm iSuppli reports that the company has moved three slots from 2008 to take the number nine spot on this year’s top 20 list of global semiconductor suppliers.

While the numbers show that AMD had losses of 7.6% YOY, the performance is actually quite commendable on a list where top five suppliers like Texas Instruments and STMicrolectronics lost 13.2% and 18.6%, respectively.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) of the United States managed to limit its 2009 revenue decline to 7.6 percent due to its strong performance in the microprocessor market which is also expected to decline by only 7.6 percent in 2009. This allowed AMD to climb back into the Top-10 rankings after a one-year absence, rising to the No.-9 position, up from 12th place in 2008.

The upward momentum bodes well for the firm which stood on fairly shaky ground under disgraced ex-CEO Hector Ruiz. With AMD’s GPU division firing on all cylinders, a significant debt reduction plan under way, and a concrete two-year production plan, the green team is looking healthier than ever.
