AMD launches HD 4600 series

AMD has released the new Radeon HD 4600 series graphics cards. Essentially detuned HD 4800s, the cards come in two variants to suit everyday users. The HD 4670 and the HD 4650 both feature 55nm chips with 320 stream processing cores, consuming 60W and 50W respectively. Both support DirectX 10.1 and HD playback.

The 512MB GDDR3 HD 4670 is available now for $79. A 1GB model should hit shelves later this month but its price is unknown, and the 512MB GDDR2 HD 4650 is expected appear around the end of September.

Reviews are already coming in for the cards. TweakTown pits two Sapphire-branded HD 4670s against a variety of budget cards, both singularly and in Crossfire. They love it. Guru3D also recommends the 4670 GDDR3 512MB version based on their testing. AMDZone notes the card’s similarity to the older HD 3870 but considers the HD 4670 to still be a great budget deal. Also, Hexus gives their English opinion.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the HD 4600 series stacks up when the cards are released in the near future.
