Android 2.1 ported to T-Mo G1? Think again

Over the next 24 hours you may hear news that Android 2.1, the Android build running on Google’s Nexus One, was ported to the T-Mobile G1. This is false.

Word broke today that a developer had created “version 0.9999” of the ROM, indicating that several features were benched for bug fixes or compatibility reasons, including:

Car Home
Live Wallpapers
Live Boot
High-res Wallpapers
High-res Applications

As well as A2SD, CompCache and Swap which were being prepared for a later version. Unfortunately, none of this is true as several screens and apps packed into the ROM are actually older versions than what Android 2.1 would offer.

Long story short: When Android 2.1 is actually available for any Android phone, we’ll be sure to let you know as they come.

16 Dec 2009 ~ 4:22am RWB I always thought that Android was Android, regardless of what phone you have. This makes it seem like the G1 is being left behind and no longer receiving future updates.

What am I missing? Please tell me I am missing something.
16 Dec 2009 ~ 9:07am Thrax The G1 has hardware limitations which make it improbable that it will receive firmware updates going forward. It does not have enough internal memory to fit Android 2.x ROMs without modification.

16 Dec 2009 ~ 10:49am Thrax Motorola has been mum on the issue of Android 2.0 to such a degree that it seems they're resistant to the idea except in the circumstance of customer outcry.
16 Dec 2009 ~ 10:53am QCH Their forums show that the customer wants v2.0 and the Motorola folks post ongoing work on software and firmware without admitting to whether it's v1.6 or 2.0 or just bugfixes.

16 Dec 2009 ~ 1:51pm Thrax The G1 is by far the weakest Android device there is. Everything is faster.
16 Dec 2009 ~ 9:05pm ardichoke and yet I still love my G1. Want more pizazz for your G1? Root it and install CyanogenMod. I did it months ago and haven't looked back since. As for the G1 being the weakest Android there is... of course it is. It was the first one to market. Logically it's going to be the weakest compared to the other Android phones released after it.
