Irish mobile carrier Meteor has announced through its community forums that smartphones based on the HTC Hero hardware will be receiving Android 2.x in March.
Just got another update on this and HTC have said they are releasing 2.1 on the Hero and we are hoping to have this availible [sic] by the end of March.
This will be available via the HTC website and we are also looking at other ways to make this update easier to access for our customers. As soon as I hear any more on this I’ll let you all now becuase [sic] I know the release of 2.1 is something that everyone is looking forward to.
Devices based on the HTC Hero core hardware include the OEM model with the controversial chin, the Sprint Hero with the redesigned fascia, and Verizon’s Droid Eris.
There remains some confusion, however, as to what version of Android 2.x these devices are expected to receive. Because the Hero employs HTC’s lauded Sense UI, integrating that interface with the “default” Android firmware takes time, which could cause new firmware releases for Hero-based devices to lag behind the latest stock firmware versions
To that end, Meteor representative “Glynn” said in a post dated a day earlier than above that, “HTC sense UI will be tightly integrated with Android 2.0… Because of this new versions of the software take a while to develop. As for 2.1 this would also need to be developed and there is no update on this.”
Whatever the Android version coming to the trio of Hero-based devices, rest assured that Android 1.x is on its way out the door.
