Android 2.x soon for HTC Droid Eris

droid_erisOwners of the HTC Droid Eris will be pleased to learn that Verizon has recently promised to update the device to Android 2.x.

In a short interview conducted by InformationWeek, Verizon and HTC intend to update the phone with at least Android version 2.0, and possibly 2.1, in 1Q10.

“The Droid Eris currently using Android 1.5, can and will be upgraded to newer a Android operating system software in first quarter 2010. The enhancement will allow customers to continue to enjoy the powerful HTC Sense experience while also gaining the additional benefits of Google Maps Navigation,” Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney said.

In addition to Google Maps Navigation, Android 2.0 improves the browser, revamps the camera software, refines the user interface, and adds support for multiple Microsoft Exchange accounts.

The HTC Droid Eris, also known as the Hero, is a low-cost alternative to the Motorola Droid on Verizon and the Samsung Moment on Sprint. The North American version features a 3.2″ 320×480 capacitive touchscreen, a 528MHz Qualcomm ARM processor, 288MB RAM, 512MB ROM and AT&T or Verizon/Sprint support via UMTS 850/1900 or CDMA 800/1900MHz radios.

    QCH Motorola... The Cliq please!!!!
  2. AlexDeGruven
AlexDeGruven This bodes well for the Moment and Moto Droid getting 2.0 early next year as well, as I doubt Sprint and Verizon would want to hold people off of the flagship Android phones getting 2.0 while admittedly lower-end phones get it.
  3. Snarkasm
Snarkasm Thrax, the Eris isn't the Hero. Sprint has a version of the Hero, and the rest of the world has a Hero, but the Eris is its own animal.

In fact, Eris will be benefiting from the work HTC's already doing with the Hero, since all they're really needing to do with it is port the Sense UI to 2.0 or 2.1.
  4. Thrax
Thrax No, I'm afraid that is simply incorrect. The first Hero with the controversial chin is the EMEA version; the Hero with the redesigned fascia is the Sprint version; and the Verizon version is yet another rework with a new fascia and a proximity sensor.

In fact, the Droid Eris has lagged behind the Hero in firmware development only because Verizon was delaying the update. This weekend's 2.x news came about specifically in the context of customers requesting it.
  5. Snarkasm
Snarkasm Well, I consider extra hardware + a different name to be a different device, but if they're considered the same family, they're considered the same family, I guess.
  6. ardichoke
ardichoke Not just the same family Snark, they are damn near the same hardware internally.
  7. Snarkasm
Snarkasm So are most of the phones on the market for the last year, in my experience. How many 528MHz processors, 3G radios, and 2.4" LCDs are out there?

    No matter.
  8. ardichoke
ardichoke Quite a few snark. My understanding is that there isn't a standard for mobile device processors such as with x86. Thus a motorola proc can differ quite a bit from a qualcomm proc or any other mobile device processor. Same thing with the radios and all the other hardware in the phone.
