Android NDK gives game devs better OpenGL

Google has today unveiled version R3 of the Android Native Development Kit, which empowers developers with the ability to craft OpenGL ES 2.0 applications in native-code languages like C and C++ for lightning-fast software.

The new OpenGL ES 2.0 libraries are designed to leverage the rendering hardware found in Android handsets running Android version 2.0 or later. The mobile-oriented API provides vertex and fragment shading via the GLSL shading language to enable rich 3D graphics comparable to the Nintendo DS or PlayStation Portable, depending on the phone in question.

The R3 Android NDK also supplies several bug fixes and has additionally improved the toolchain to produce better, faster code for phones.

Finally, Google noted that developers looking to work with the new version of the NDK must first install the official Android SDK.

AlexDeGruven Great stuff. Some of the games I've started seeing out of Android devs now that the hardware is spec'ing up nicely makes me really look forward to seeing what's next.
