According to a report from research firm The NPD Group, sales in the Android ecosystem outstripped that of the iPhone in 1Q10 to take the number two position in the smartphone market.
Coming in at 28% of the market to Apple’s 21%, both vendors continued to fall short of Research In Motion (RIM), the perennial leader.
“As in the past, carrier distribution and promotion have played a crucial role in determining smartphone market share,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD. “In order to compete with the iPhone, Verizon Wireless has expanded its buy-one-get-one offer beyond RIM devices to now include all of their smartphones.”
The BOGO program helped drive sales of the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris, which also helped Verizon Wireless keep up with AT&T, capturing 30% and 32% of the market, respectively.
Finally, NPD noted a 5% YOY increase in the average selling price for all phones to $88, and a 3% YOY decrease in the ASP of smartphones to $151.
