Apple today officially announced the release of Aperture 3, the newest version of their professional photo processing powerhouse.
Bringing over 200 new features to the table, Aperture 3 offers new functions like iPhoto ’09’s facial recognition, as well as Places’ geomapping support for organizing and viewing images by location. Aperture 3 also includes new edge-aware, non-destructive photo retouching brushes, which makes it easier to adjust individual elements of a photo. Adjustments can now also be saved as presets, enabling users to easily duplicate various looks from one photo shoot to the next.
The browsing experience has also been improved with a sexy full-screen browser, which allows users to navigate their projects and shoots without dealing with the distractions of a full UI. IPhoto’s slideshow features and themes have also been integrated into Aperture, permitting photos, audio and video clips to be combined with optional HD output.
Perhaps the most exciting feature, however, is the integrated video support; video can now be imported, organized, trimmed and played within Aperture.
This is a great feature for videos taken on high-end DSLR cameras and smartphones alike. As more and more video-enabled devices enter the market, adding video support as Aperture has done will become an increasingly important selling point.
Prices for Aperture 3 run $199.00 new and $99.00 for an upgrade, with the former running $100 less than Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and the latter coming up even. A trial is also available.
