Apple tweaking iTunes to bork jailbreaking?

Apple tweaking iTunes to bork jailbreaking?

Gizmodo is reporting that the new aluminum MacBook units are shipping with a custom build of iTunes that stops jailbreaking dead in its tracks.

The report alleges that the new build does not recognize an iPhone booted into the recovery mode required for jailbreaking.

Users over at HowardForums and iPodTouchFans are reporting problems running the Pwnage tool on the new aluminum MacBooks, which don’t seem to be able to recognize an iPhone or iPod Touch when it is booted into DFU mode, a vital requirement for jailbreaking.

The report goes on to say that it is not entirely clear what has changed, but software is the most likely culprit. As an interesting side effect, aluminum MacBook owners seeking to jailbreak their iPhone are being forced to use the Quickpwn utility for Windows.

Irony, you are such a cruel and hilarious mistress.

jared I'm going to agree with one of the comments on this one...
Gogo blog hype. "Hey, did you hear people are having problems running this hack on these new machines?" "Yeah. Quick, lets spin it so it seems intentional, even though the machines use a chipset from a different vendor, a unique build of OS X, and noone has confirmed the exact problem.!"

Seriously. I'm guessing the Pwnage tool probably looks for something specific USB wise to talk to the phone under OS X, and can't find it on these new systems because they no longer use an Intel chipset and USB interface.

Snarkasm It's not that the Pwnage tool doesn't know where to look, it's that iTunes won't even recognize a device in recovery mode. You can't look for something that, to the host machine, doesn't exist, now can you?

Thrax The comment doesn't really get what's going on.

jared I wasn't mostly talking about the over speculation.

I find it hard to believe Apple released a "special" version of iTunes on their new Macbooks just to thwart jailbreaking.

Then again, stranger things have happened :ninja:
