Apple’s iPod maestro stepping down

Apple’s iPod maestro stepping down

A Tuesday report by Apple confirmed that Tony Fadell, lead exec of Apple’s iPod division, has decided to step down.

Fadell is set to be replaced by IBM executive Mark Papermaster. Apple reports that Papermaster will join the team as the Senior VP of Devices, a role responsible for both the iPod and iPhone divisions.

In spite of stepping down, Fadell will remain with Apple in a new capacity as personal adviser to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Our prediction: In recent months, it has been speculated that Steve Jobs is affecting a reduced presence at conferences to illustrate that the success of Apple does not rest entirely on his shoulders. If that is true, Fadell is the finest example of this demonstration in single-handedly rescuing Apple from the brink of death with the iPhone and the iPod. We strongly believe that Fadell’s acumen and tenacity has resulted in this move which puts Fadell uniquely in the position to be groomed by Jobs as the next CEO of Apple.

Linc I've been reading the opposite - that Fadell is serving as "advisor" for a year as part of a settlement to keep him from competing with Apple for a full year after stepping down.
