And pretty much nails it. I can’t tell you how disappointed my son was with Spore. He goofed around with the Creature Creator back during IC LAN 2008, and absolutely fell in love with it. We agreed back in September that Spore was to be his reward if he got on the honor roll. He did, and I got it for him.
After no small amount of frustration, we got the game installed, and he rabidly played it. For about a week. Then it fizzled, his big brother bought him a copy of World of Warcraft, and that was that. I asked him yesterday about Spore and he said “Dad, I have a secret, kinda. Spore’s really not that fun. I thought it was going to be so cool but I beat it fast and now it’s just boring.” From the mouths of babes.
I’m not as disappointed in Mirror’s Edge as Ben Kuchera is, but I definitely understand the frustration with 6 hours of gameplay. Mirror’s Edge could have been SO much more. I still think it’s worth buying, but just maybe you should wait until it gets discounted a bit.
One common thread with all of his disappointments is this: Hype. The things that raise our expectations up the most also set us up for the biggest fall.
