Meet the HD 4830. It’s a stripped down HD 4850 aimed at filling the gap between its well endowed $150 forefather and the $70 HD 4670 that fits nicely between the two and is expected to compete against the Jolly Green Giant’s GeForce offerings in the $130 price range.
The HD 4830 boasts 640 stream processors, a 256-bit memory interface and GDDR3 memory. On paper, the card stacks up nicely against the GeForce 9800 with the same bus width and clock speed. The GeForce has the edge in shaders but the new Radeon takes the lead in shaders.
Reviews are hitting the web today. Here’s what we’ve found:
- Tech Report reviews the reference design, declaring an AMD victory in securing the market at every price point.
- Hexus gives the same card a go. From their UK standpoint, the card only loses to NVIDIA’s offerings by failing to provide additional features like CUDA and PhysX.
- AMDZone is pleased with the card’s low power consumption and DirectX 10.1 support.
- Finally, Guru3D reviews a HIS-branded model. It’s a reference design with a colored PCB and aftermarket cooler. They say overclocking the card brings HD 4850 performance for a bargain price.
