ATI introduces another Radeon

ATI introduces another Radeon

Meet the HD 4830. It’s a stripped down HD 4850 aimed at filling the gap between its well endowed $150 forefather and the $70 HD 4670 that fits nicely between the two and is expected to compete against the Jolly Green Giant’s GeForce offerings in the $130 price range.

The HD 4830 boasts 640 stream processors, a 256-bit memory interface and GDDR3 memory. On paper, the card stacks up nicely against the GeForce 9800 with the same bus width and clock speed. The GeForce has the edge in shaders but the new Radeon takes the lead in shaders.

Reviews are hitting the web today. Here’s what we’ve found:

  • Tech Report reviews the reference design, declaring an AMD victory in securing the market at every price point.
  • Hexus gives the same card a go. From their UK standpoint, the card only loses to NVIDIA’s offerings by failing to provide additional features like CUDA and PhysX.
  • AMDZone is pleased with the card’s low power consumption and DirectX 10.1 support.
  • Finally, Guru3D reviews a HIS-branded model. It’s a reference design with a colored PCB and aftermarket cooler. They say overclocking the card brings HD 4850 performance for a bargain price.

Thrax Everyone should just go buy an 8800GT and skip this lame race at the $100 mark. If you want a better card, get a 4850 or gtfo.
  2. BuddyJ
BuddyJ There have been some sweet deals on HD 4850s lately. I'd quit eating super McHuge Triple Bacon Cheesebuster Burgers for a week to have the cash to cover the price difference.
  3. Thrax
Thrax I'm simply baffled by people who toy around with $70 cards when an extra $30 will land them a beast in a different league. Nobody can convince me that $30 isn't worth an extra 50-80% performance!
  4. Komete
Komete I bought an 8800gt a little less than a year ago when it was the hottest thing. I got a deal for 180 when they were selling around 240. I just feel jipped with how fast prices have plummeted. I mean prices always drop but man video cards have dropped like a rock this cycle.

My last experience with ATI was great, that's when I bought a 9500pro, but every time I've upgraded since ATI was always behind when I was ready to buy.

I'm going to use this card for another year but damn ATI/AMD, you better have something for me next time!

Tim There should only be 4850s and 4870s. All this BS about providing lower powered versions to cover different price points is ridiculous. Anyone who wants a gaming video card will spend the $ to buy something good, other people don't need a high powered video card, simple as that.

Steam once put out statistics on what video card people were using to game. the majority were using sub $100 cards. I think if 150-300+ were the only options to game with, the online gaming community would be close nonexistent. I dunno, I think it's an under discussed but pertinent price point.

But in reality, PC gaming is dieing out to consoles anyway. I've pretty much stopped gaming period.
