Atomic storage

The best way to store more information is to increase the resolution of the media. IBM research is heading in the direction of atomic-level resolution for magnetic storage.

Recent research by IBM suggests that sometime in the future, digital storage media will be capable of manipulating the magnetic charge within individual iron atoms. Drastically increasing storage capacity.

One of their researchers likened the difference between today’s technology, and this atomic resolution as similar to the difference between the vacuum tubes of the ’70s and today’s microprocessors.
