There must be something in the water down there in the land of kangaroo and backwards-flushing toilets, as Optus, Australia’s second largest ISP, has opted into the country’s firewall trial.
The move lends credibility to a program that has suffered from poor image since ISP iiNet lambasted the firewall for casting a wider net than advertised.
The firewall took another hit in March when Communications Minister Stephen Conroy’s office sprung a leak and outed the blacklist which spurred iiNet to avoid any participation in the program.
As savvy citizens bury their face deeper into their palms, Conroy thanked Optus for helping to provide “robust results.” Optus joins incumbent telco Telstra, a firm that is working on backend filtering technologies.
Optus is the eighth participant that has volunteered to undertake a customer-facing trial. Other ISPs include Primus Telecommunications, Highway 1, Nelson Bay Online, Netforce, OMNIconnect, TECH 2U and Webshield.
