Autodesk’s entire catalog is now free to students, faculty, and Autodesk Assistance Program participants. This is undoubtedly good news to anyone wanting to enter the engineering, digital media, content creation, or any other number of fields that use Autodesk’s products.
Autodesk produces software such as AutoCAD, perhaps the most well-known software packages for 2D/3D drafting and Maya, a highly popular tool for creating video games, animated film, and visual effects.
To obtain the software, registration at the Autodesk web site is required. Information regarding your current school, expected graduation year, and current academic discipline is required. Activation of student accounts can be done through e-mail, Facebook Connect, or SMS. Once your account has been activated, the entire catalog becomes available.
The software is nearly identical to the retail package. It is fully functional, licensed for three years, and outside of usage scenarios, is only limited by the inclusion of a print banner. Licensing prohibits use in classroom or lab use for instructional purposes, and certainly prohibits commercial use. Further details on eligibility, licensing, and use can be found at their Education Community FAQ page.
