Regular readers may remember a few months back when Icrontic covered software powerhouse Autodesk’s new platform agnostic mobile UI runtime—Autodesk Scaleform for Mobile Platforms.
Created to simplify user interface development across all the major mobile platforms, the Scaleform Mobile SDK was put to use by Autodesk’s Gameware team in the production of their tech demo title Starforce Battlement, which is now making its debut on the App Store as a full fledged game.
Starforce Battlement is your standard 2D tower defence affair and places players in command of United Earth Alliance forces fending off the Rebel Outliers in a series of missions across four distinct planets. Though there are no groundbreaking new gameplay features, it certainly appears a polished experience with some swish visuals brightening what would be otherwise a generic game.
Built in Adobe Flash and Autodesk 3DS Max—Starforce Battlement leverages the Scaleform Mobile SDK to provide hardware accelerated vector graphics rendering yet remain easily portable to other mobile platforms. Also utilised in the games development was the Scaleform Mobile SDK’s support for ActionScript 2, ActionScript 3 and native C++ APIs as well as accelerated compilation and the included FMOD license for audio support.
Starforce Battlement is available now on iOS as a free iPad download and will be making its way to Android and Windows 8 devices later this year. The game and all its assets (including the FMOD sound engine) continues to be bundled with the Scaleform Mobile SDK.
