Right after Xbox Gold users were treated to a menagerie of puzzle game deals for last week’s Deal of the Week offerings, this week retains the puzzle-lover’s euphoria with news that Avatar Puzzle Pop has just been released. Created solely by Andrew Wilson for his England-based A GAME BY Andrew Wilson studioette, this new Indie game has everything a proper puzzle game should have, at a great price of 80 Microsoft Points ($1 USD).

Avatar Puzzle Pop certainly doesn’t go light on how much you get for the price you pay. The core puzzle gamplay itself consists of a large playing field with colorful blocks that have to be matched up in order to clear. From there, it has six flavors to choose from, ranging from traditional stages to more unique takes such as “Dice” where dice have to be matched up to win poker chips. Of course, no action puzzle game is complete without a 2-player mode, which Avatar Puzzle Pop happily delivers as well.

Avatar Puzzle Pop includes six main game modes, including two-player versus

The “Avatar” part of Avatar Puzzle Pop comes from the fact that your Xbox Avatar character joins the action by dancing and cheering alongside of the puzzle playing field. While it may seem gimmicky to include the Avatars, having animated characters to coincide with puzzle games isn’t anything new, as puzzle classics such as Tetris Attack on the SNES and the more modern Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix have characters that cheer when you do well and sweat when you’re close to failing.

The creator of Avatar Puzzle Pop, Andrew Wilson, is not only a game enthusiast and developer, he is also a musician as well. The game features a retro chiptune inspired soundtrack, which old-school game music fans may find enjoyable. It’s certainly nice to see a game designer that also has a passion for music.

Avatar Puzzle Pop can be purchased on the Microsoft LIVE Marketplace for 80 Microsoft Points.
