Nintendo today announced that they’ve lowered the suggested retail price for their Nintendo DS Lite system. Effective June 5th, retailers will drop the price tag for the most popular mobile gaming platform in the world down to $99.99. This is a price drop of $30 and is the first time the price for the system has been lowered since its release in 2006. This follows closely behind the release of the most recent upgrade to the system, the 3DS, which currently retails for $249.99. The other variations on the system, the DSi and the DSi XL have also maintained their price-points, for now.
In the same announcement, Nintendo revealed that the six best-selling Mario games for the DS will be getting new, ‘Mario Red’ game cases in an effort to ensure that fans can find them more easily, and understand that they are an essential part of the DS experience.
“From the moment it launched, Nintendo DS Lite hit a sweet spot for consumers in terms of value, experience and fun,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “This new price point will introduce Nintendo DS Lite to even more consumers, and the new red packaging will make it easy for them to find their favorite Mario titles.”
The titles chosen for the new packaging are (in order of popularity):
- New Super Mario Bros.
- Mario Kart DS
- Super Mario 64 DS
- Mario Party DS
- Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
- Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!
