Today Reddit admin HueyPriest announced that the default subreddit (/r/reddit.com) is no longer, as Reddit has grown up and far exceeded the days when only a single subreddit was needed.
The new default list of subreddits is (in no particular order):
- pics
- gaming
- worldnews
- videos
- todayilearned
- IAmA
- funny
- atheism
- politics
- science
- AskReddit
- technology
- WTF
- blog & announcements
- bestof
- AdviceAnimals
- Music
- aww
- askscience
- movies
These twenty represent the most popular subreddits today, and these will make up the new “front page of Reddit”, which already calls itself the “Front page of the Internet”.
This is a good thing for Reddit; people would just submit everything to reddit.com, which for the most part was a morass of bad links and reposts. The problem was so big that a sub-community called “The Knights of /new” formed up to deal with downvoting all the garbage posts into oblivion (a controversy that would require a separate article to get into). Perhaps now that people will be forced to choose a more appropriate subreddit for submissions, things will be kept somewhat more on topic.
