Blizzard announces Facebook/Battle.net integration

Blizzard announced just moments ago that the company is working to integrate elements of Facebook with their Battle.net matchmaking service. Beginning with the launch of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty on July 27, players will be able to add other Blizzard gamers that are friends on Facebook to their Battle.net friends list.

“We’re pleased to be working with Facebook to integrate their platform with Battle.net to enhance the social-entertainment experience for our players,” said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. “This new functionality will make it easier than ever to connect with friends on Battle.net and play StarCraft II and future Blizzard Entertainment games together.”

The new Facebook functionality in Battle.net will be tested in the near future via the ongoing StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta test and will be available to all StarCraft II players when the game ships later this year. Information about other Facebook-related features on Battle.net will be announced at a later date.

Bandrik This sounds kind of cool, in theory. Really, I see this as more of a marketing ploy to get more people hooked on the game, and not so much of an added feature or convenience to gamers. Certainly a mix of both, but I'm left wondering who's really winning with this development.

Either way, more pylons needed to get me excited for StarCraft II.
  2. Koreish
Koreish Aww this is gonna make it hard for Zynga to own Facebook one day.
  3. Dejitaru Entertainment @Bandrik: seeing that it will be easier for players to find their friends on Battlenet, I think it adds convenience to gamers, does it not?
  4. Unknown Wonder this will be the sane for WoW sense blizzard not to long ago intergraded wow and battle net togather.
