Canon releases super-high-capacity camcorder update

Hot on the heels of Sony’s new interchangeable-lens camcorder paradigm shift, the NEX-VG10, Canon yesterday announced a slightly tamer device, the VIXIA HF M32, a refresh of their former M31 cam. While it won’t show up the new Sony unit, it does double the internal storage over the M31 to 64GB, and with SDXC compatibility, the storage jumps up to 2TB, enough space to record 24 hours a day of HD footage.

The feature set on Canon’s new showing also differs; Touch & Track technology, which allows you to identify a person or object to be tracked in the video by touching the LCD screen, is accompanied by active, powered image stabilization, easy downsampling of your video content, and “relay recording”—the camera will switch automatically from one memory source to another if the original is full, allowing you to switch out storage without missing a beat. The camera’s also compatible with Eye-Fi SD cards, which can transfer your content over WiFi to your chosen device. An available ($600) waterproof case, the WP-V2, will let you bring the camcorder down to 130 feet deep for any underwater operation.

If that feature set is interesting to you, the price will be even moreso—at $999, it’s half the price of Sony’s new offering even before you factor in multiple lenses you’ll have to get to take advantage of the NEX-VG10’s interchangeable mount. It should also be available in September for purchase.
