CES doesn’t officially start until Thursday, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t press events.
CES Unveiled
CES Unveiled is a press-only event giving a relatively small number of vendors an early chance to show off some of their products.
The first one we looked at was the Mitsubishi booth where they showed off a 73-inch 3D TV. The tech has certainly progressed since last year; the color and image quality issues have been mostly sorted out, leaving distracting halos and double images in only a few places, and the glasses only lost sync a few times in the minute or so we watched. But despite the progress it still has a long way to go until it’s really ready for the home.
Technocel showed their MicroUSB Battery Boost which, as its name implies, is a spare battery for mobile devices using a MicroUSB connector for charging. The battery itself is recharged via standard USB connector that slides out. Once charged, the Battery Boost provides up to an hour of device charging. Even better is the MicroSD card reader housed in the USB connector. We have a review sample and will no doubt have an opportunity to test it during CES.
AMD Press Event
The highlight of the night was the AMD press event at the House of Blues. Using a talk show format hosted by Joel McHale (from Community), AMD CEO Dirk Meyer and others presented the case for the Fusion APU and its practical and potential uses. Devices on hand included netbooks, small (13″) notebooks, and micro-ITX systems. We got to play around with the netbooks which were demonstrating 1080p video, games and rich HTML5 content on a beta of Internet Explorer 9. All of these setups were completely indistinguishable from a powerful laptop GPU. Also on display was the Microsoft Surface, which uses Intel’s CPUs and AMD’s GPUs.
We’ll bring some more details in our “Day 0” coverage from Wednesday including the Intel and Microsoft keynotes and our meeting with AMD’s Fusion and Mobile GPU teams.
