Mozilla CEO John Lilly has gone on record to state that the relationship between Google and Mozilla has become “more complicated” than it has been before.
Mozilla has relied on Google for a significant share of its revenue for quite some time. Through advertising, bundling and referral deals, Google and Mozilla have been mutually beneficial to the other. Yet recent developments, like Google Chrome and Firefox’s departure from the Google Pack in favor of Chrome, have put this darling relationship in harder times.
Given recent competition, Lilly says the situation is complicated but not unworkable. “We collaborate with Google, we talk to them and we have a fine and reasonable relationship,” he said.
Lilly also admits that it has hastened the need to be weaned from Google money, a task that was already in the works. “Our goal is to be an advocate for the web for 50 or even 100 years, and you can’t depend on any one organization,” he remarked.
